Hughey Law Firm Featured in Law&Crime: 83-Year-Old Found Covered in Fire Ants With More Than 1,000 Bites and Stings
Elder AbuseShelba Catterton, an 83-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s dementia, died after allegedly suffering more than 1,000 fire ant bites and stings while living at Harmony at West Ashley, a memory care facility in Charleston, South Carolina.
According to a lawsuit filed by her family, Catterton allegedly walked through an unsecured door leading to a secured courtyard and was later found alone and covered in fire ants. She suffered extensive bites and stings across her body and was hospitalized with serious health complications, including hypothermia and pneumonia, before her death on August 7.
The family has filed a lawsuit alleging negligence, wrongful death, and violations of state laws governing Alzheimer’s care facilities.
